The Witcher Season 1

Watch VFX Breakdown Reel

Netflix flagship series The Witcher, a fantasy drama based on the Polish book series, stars Henry Cavill as an itinerant monster hunter. One Of Us helped to design several of the creatures he encounters, brought them to life, and then oversaw their inevitable slaughter.

The Witcher VFX supervisor explains how the show’s monsters and magic were created

“When that came up in the script, I asked, ‘What’s a Roachhound? Are we doing a mangy dog?’ Lauren said, ‘No. We want it to be half cockroach and half dog.’ The company One of Us took on that particular project. That was straightforward because we wanted to have a cockroach move with the nuances of a hound.”

The Witcher’s’ most terrifying (and saddest) creature

“The design of the roach hound stemmed from a character in one of the books. They would experiment on creatures, combining them with metal and other elements, forging hybridised, Frankenstein-like monsters. Early versions of the creatures leaned more toward a hound/hyena design but it didn’t really feel like something that belonged in the Witcher world.”
