Watch Trailer

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River.  Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

How One of Us gave a stop-motion feel to their digital visual effects on ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’

Seeking to pay homage to the original film’s look and feel, elements like sand needed to be particularly art directed to ensure the sand still felt practical. Explains Brennan-Craddock: “Step one was, we just looked at the original film for the look of the sand effects. When the Sandworm breached the desert surface sand would be thrown up that looked a lot like a bucket’s worth of sand being thrown up in front of a blue screen. So in Houdini, we scaled down our simulations to that  kind of bucket-sized scale.”

One of Us Helps Capture a Stop-Motion Aesthetic in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’

Stop-motion animation was used to explain the death of Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones), which involved a plane crash and shark attack. “We worked closely with Mackinnon & Saunders, who animated the characters in the plane and ocean,” remarks Brennan-Craddock. “We built the plane, but the most challenging thing we did was the ocean itself. The mindset for this was how would a stop-motion artist build an ocean… and replicate that.”

What’s Old is New Again in the Madcap World of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

“Framestore and One of Us were our two main vendors,  with the Influencers sequence being the most complex as people literally get sucked into their smartphones. “That was a late idea,” Bickerton reveals.
