fxinsider: One of Us helps the climb to Everest
“The biggest challenge for putting together the summit shots was to find the look – to find a balance of deep blue sky, readable faces, painfully bright snow (there’s a reason why they wear dark goggles) – and to bring these together in a way which was compelling and beautiful. “
How the Everest VFX team scaled new heights
One of Us worked on two sequences for Everest overseen by VFX supervisors Dominic Parker and Emmanuel Pichereau. This firstly involved the summit sequence, everything above Hillary Step. The live action was shot on a large greenscreen stage and due to the size of the greenscreens a great deal of prep work was necessary to make sure the shots would work.

One of Us Reaches the Summit for Everest
One of Us worked on two sequences for Everest that take place at the summit above Hillary’s Step. Their work involved extending in all directions the huge green screen stage where the live action was shot, creating particle and light effects for the rarified atmosphere at those extreme altitudes, and producing dramatic storm cloud environments as the weather turns on the climbers.
The Crystal Clarity and Cold Breaths of Everest
“Everest presented us with some unique challenges, for sure,” observes One of Us visual effects supervisor Dominic Parker, who along with colleague Emmanuel Pichereau was responsible for over 70 VFX shots, including set extensions, digital matte paintings of the summit and six establishing storm shots.
