The Zone of Interest

Watch VFX Breakdown Reel

The film centers around Rudolf Höss (the camp commandant of Auschwitz) and his family through moments during WW2.

The work delivered consisted of adding a CG camp into a lot of shots, a river of ash (FX), multiple shots of chimney smoke and fire, DMP environments, toxic sky smoke, numerous splitscreens/morphs, and a lot of prep work!

The majority of shots were filmed simultaneously through up to 10 cameras and the angle was then chosen in post. This meant that every shot had multiple cameras that needed to be painted out.

The film was screened recently at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix!

Post-production uncovered: Dirty Looks on The Zone Of Interest

The film also made use of thermal cameras, which prompted extensive research into repurposing industrial and military cameras for cinematic use. Footage transfer and grading capabilities of various non-standard cameras were tested and Dirty Looks worked closely with the VFX company, One Of Us, to create pin-sharp images that stand up next to the quality of the Sony Venice camera footage.
